AP Exams 2026 Digital: Bluebook Rollout, May 4-15 Dates, New Cybersecurity Pilot

The College Board's 2026 AP exam window opens May 4 and closes May 15, and it marks the first year in which the majority of Advanced Placement tests run through the Bluebook app. Twenty-eight AP exams are now delivered digitally in 2026. 16 fully digital and 12 in a hybrid paper-and-screen format. Matching the roster that first moved online in 2025. Late testing runs May 18-22. The AP exams 2026 digital shift lands alongside the AP Cybersecurity pilot expansion and a fresh AP Networking pilot planned for fall 2026. For juniors and seniors sitting exams this spring, the mechanics of test day have changed more than the content.

What changed in the AP exams 2026 digital format

Bluebook, the same app that runs the digital SAT, now delivers 28 AP exams during the May 4-15 window. Sixteen tests are fully digital, meaning multiple choice and free response both happen on-screen. Twelve are hybrid. Students answer multiple choice in Bluebook, then switch to a paper booklet for the essays and long responses. For 2026, Desmos is built directly into Bluebook for every calculator-permitted exam, so students no longer need a separate handheld. Proctors also distribute two sheets of scratch paper for every digital exam, removing the earlier gap between fully digital and hybrid modes.

Which exams stay on paper

Not every AP exam moved to Bluebook. The College Board kept paper-based delivery for AP courses where scoring depends on visual work. AP Chinese Language and Culture, AP Japanese Language and Culture, AP Music Theory, AP 2-D Art and Design, AP 3-D Art and Design, and AP Drawing all continue as before. AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism also stay on paper this year. Two format-specific tweaks matter for English students: AP English Language and AP English Literature both dropped from five answer choices to four on multiple-choice items. That change reduces guessing math but does not shift the total score scale.

Device rules and school logistics

Students can test on a personal Mac, Windows laptop, iPad, or a school-managed Chromebook. Personal Chromebooks are not permitted. Windows 11 is the recommended OS, and Bluebook will stop supporting Windows 10 in fall 2026. macOS 12.0 is the minimum. Devices need at least 4 hours of battery life and 1 GB of free storage. External keyboards are barred on laptops, but Windows tablets require them. Test-day connectivity only needs to work at the start and end of the exam. If Wi-Fi drops mid-test, students keep going, and answers upload when the connection returns. AP coordinators can request loaner devices or Wi-Fi hotspots from the College Board for schools with equipment gaps.

AP Cybersecurity pilot expands with Cisco

The AP Cybersecurity pilot wrapped its 2025-26 run with about 3,100 students at 183 schools across 30 states. For 2026-27, the College Board is scaling up toward 800 schools and adding vendor-specific instruction built with Cisco. The partnership adds labs, lesson plans, and alignment with Cisco's entry-level cybersecurity credential. So students can pursue college credit through the AP exam or a workforce credential through the Cisco Certified Support Technician exam. AP Cybersecurity formally launches nationwide in the 2026-27 school year, with the first official AP exam scheduled for May 2027. It sits inside the AP Career Kickstart track alongside AP Business Principles and Personal Finance.

AP Networking pilot begins fall 2026

The College Board will start its third and final AP Networking pilot in fall 2026, closing out the framework before a full national launch in 2027-28. Only schools that already ran the AP Networking or AP Cybersecurity pilots qualify to join this round. The pilot exam, scheduled for May 2027, is fully digital and contains multiple-choice questions only. It puts students in the role of a network technician or administrator and uses career-connected scenarios to test decision-making. Teachers can access sample lesson plans, unit guides, and a pilot guide through AP Classroom starting July 2026. Virtual AP Summer Institute registration for AP Networking closes July 10, 2026.

What's Next

Score reports for the May 2026 AP exams will release in early July through students' College Board accounts, following the standard schedule. Schools interested in AP Cybersecurity for 2026-27 should complete the AP Course Audit before the fall term begins, and Networking pilot schools must register through AP Central before July 10, 2026 for summer training. Students planning to sit AP exams in May 2027 should download Bluebook now and run the practice test in the app to confirm their device meets the updated Windows 11 and macOS 12.0 requirements.
